Save for Vacations with a Budget

You Deserve a Vacation — Here's How to Actually Budget for One

Let's get one thing straight: you work hard. You show up, you grind, you handle your responsibilities. And you deserve to enjoy your life because of it — not in spite of it.

I Need Vacations to Function (No, Really)

I'll be the first to admit it: I need at least three vacations a year to feel like a normal human being. Not a want. A need. When I go too long without a change of scenery, I start to feel it. I get restless, agitated, creatively drained. As someone who lives and works creatively, new experiences aren't just fun, they're fuel.

Maybe you can relate. Maybe your number is two trips a year, or one big international adventure, or a few long weekends scattered throughout the calendar. Whatever recharges you, the point is the same: vacations matter, and you shouldn't have to choose between enjoying them and being financially responsible.

The Problem with the "Vacation Itch"

You know the feeling. You're burned out, you need a break, and suddenly you're on a booking site at midnight throwing money at whatever looks good on the screen. No budget, no plan, just desperation and a credit card (that's making capitalizing off of impulse spending).

That's how vacations become financial regrets instead of meaningful memories.

Impulse travel is expensive. You pay peak prices, you overspend because you haven't thought through the budget, and you come home relaxed but stressed about money. It defeats the whole purpose.

Save for Vacation with a Dedicated Vacation Fund

The shift that changed everything for me was simple: I stopped treating vacations as spontaneous splurges and started treating them as a planned expense — because that's exactly what they are.

Every single month, I set aside a specific amount of money designated for travel. Not my general savings. Not a vague "I'll figure it out" fund. A dedicated vacation fund with a number attached to it. And I track every dollar of it in my budget tracker so I can see exactly where I stand at any given moment.

When the vacation itch hits, I'm not panicking and settling. I'm shopping for what I want. Because the money is already there, waiting.

What This Actually Looks Like

The math is simpler than most people think. If you want to take two $1,500 trips a year, that's $3,000 total — which breaks down to just $250 a month. That's it. Planned in advance, it's manageable. Scrambled together last minute, it feels impossible.

Budgeting for vacations also makes you a smarter traveler. When you know exactly how much you have to work with, you book intentionally. You compare prices. You travel during better windows. You get more out of the experience because you're not anxious about what it's costing you.

You're Not Frivolous for Wanting This

There's a version of financial advice out there that treats every enjoyable expense like a moral failing. That's not what we do here. Rest is productive. New experiences make you better at your work, your relationships, and your life. Protecting your mental health and your joy is a legitimate financial priority.

The goal isn't to save money instead of living. The goal is to plan well enough that you can do both.
